The Bushwhacker amps up the adventure factor of a trail run by adding navigation as a component of the event. The race format is very simple: run/navigate your way approximately 10 miles from start to finish along a beautiful linear park corridor. The three main format rules require racers to travel on foot, stay within park property, and visit three (3) checkpoints/aid stations along the way. All of the checkpoints will be located on the Bull Run-Occoquan trail, a major and well marked trail that connects Hemlock Overlook and Fountainhead Regional Parks. Most racers will follow this well-traveled route the entire way but some will choose to shave time/mileage by going off-trail using a map that EX2 will provide. What will you do? Are you ready for the adventure?
Hemlock Overlook and Fountainhead Regional Parks are located along the banks of the historic Bull Run and Occoquan Reservoir. These parks have some of the most beautiful and remote feeling terrain in Fairfax County, Virginia, only 30 minutes outside of Washington D.C. Sightings of deer, beaver, turkey, osprey and great blue heron are not uncommon. The Bull Run-Occoquan trail extends over rolling wooded terrain from Bull Run Regional Park in the north to Fountainhead Regional Park in the south.
