Race Day Information
Hello Cranky Monkey Competitors,
The second race of the Cranky Monkey Mountain Bike Series rolls into Fountainhead Regional Park this Sunday, August 10th. The challenging Fountainhead course is tons of fun and includes plenty of technical terrain, twisty singletrack, and steep hills. Prepare for a great day of mountain biking action!
Here are some details for race day, Sunday, August 10th:
- Directions to Race Parking:
From Interstate 95:
- Exit onto Rt. 123 North and travel approx. 4 miles
- Take a left on Hampton Rd. and travel approx. 3.5 miles
- Take a left into Fountainhead Regional Park
- Continue on the park road to upper parking lot on right
- Follow the signs to check-in
From Interstate 66:
- Exit onto Fairfax County Parkway South (exit 55) and travel approx. 6 miles
- Exit onto Rt. 123 South (Ox Rd.) and travel approx. 3 miles
- Take a right onto Henderson Rd.
- Take a left on Hampton Rd.
- Take a right into Fountainhead Regional Park
- Continue on the park road to upper parking lot on right
- Follow the signs to check-in
From Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway)
- Exit onto Braddock Road travel west for several miles
- Pass George Mason University on your right then take a left onto Rt. 123 South (Ox Rd.)
- Travel several miles on Ox Rd then take a right onto Henderson Rd.
- Take a left on Hampton Rd.
- Take a right into Fountainhead Regional Park
- Continue on the park road to upper parking lot on right
- Follow the signs to check-in
- Parking: Once you enter the park, follow the signs and park in the upper parking lot of Fountainhead. We have some overflow parking in the lower parking lot and in some grassy areas but these will be used on an as needed basis.
- Check-in/Packet Pickup: Check-in opens at 6:45am and will remain open until 15 minutes before your scheduled start time (depends on class). See start times below. At check-in you will receive your race number and t-shirt (one/person for the series) and be asked to sign a final waiver. To avoid excessive waiting and to speed up the check-in process, we ask that you please arrive at least one hour before the start of your race.
- Online registration closes at midnight on Thursday, 8/7. Race day registration WILL be available so invite your friends and family to join in the fun.
- Race Start and Lap Count: Your start time depends on your class. Start times and class dependent lap counts are below:
8am: ALL Beginners and Juniors (1 lap – 8 mi)
10am: Sport F, Sport M35+, Sport M45+, Singlespeed, Clyde (2 laps – 14 mi)
12:30pm: Sport M34-U (2 laps – 14 mi)
12:30pm: ALL Experts (3 laps – 20 mi)
- Course: This course will start with 1 mile of road riding to space the field out. Racers will then complete the one mile section of the yellow trail and then continue with the 6 mile lap. The course includes all terrain of the Fountainhead mt. biking trail except the old deadend loop. For those classes completing more than one lap, the second and third laps will begin at the bottom of Shockabilly Hill. This is a fun and challenging course with several technical sections, log ramps, and steep hills. - Course marking: The course will be marked with arrows (at all trail intersections and areas of question) and yellow caution tape (blocking off trail intersections).
- Aid stations: It will likely be warm so please stay hydrated. There will be one aid station on the course and one aid station at the finish line. Both aid stations will have cold water and Accelerade.
- Post-race food: Post-race food includes pizza, bagels, peanut butter, cookies, M&M’s, chips, Accelerade, and soft drinks. Post race food is FREE to all racers and volunteers.
- Positively Chiropractic Recovery Tent – Dr. Kathy Coutinho, local ‘chiropractor to the athletes’, and her staff from Positively Chiropractic will be on hand offering up their chiropractic, massage, active release therapy, and first aid services to all comers. Stop by the ‘Recovery Tent’ to take advantage of these FREE services. In addition, Dr. Kathy has offered to generously give away gift certificates for FREE massages and chiropractic exams. Come see how Dr. Kathy can help you ‘always move forward’.
- $1000 Shopping Spree Raffle: Win a $1000 shopping spree to The Bike Lane in Burke, VA. Tickets may be purchased online while registering for any Cranky Monkey race or on site at any of the Cranky Monkey races. The drawing will be held on Aug 24th at the final Cranky Monkey race in Quantico. The winner is NOT required to be present to win. ALL proceeds (100% of funds collected) will be split evenly between the Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts (MORE) and the Washington Humane Society (WHS). A special thanks to The Bike Lane for making this possible!
- Awards: Stick around for the awards ceremony immediately following each race! Awards will be presented to the top five finishers in each class. Some random give-a-ways will also be provided after each race. The top five finishers with the most cumulative series points from all three races will receive awards and prizes (awarded at the final race of the series).
- Sponsor Giveaways: Our generous sponsors have dug deep to provide plenty of great swag that we will randomly distribute at the awards ceremony including gift certificates from The Bike Lane, IPODS from SEAVS (Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Services), duffel bags from Accelerade, and gift certificates from Ameriprise, Positively Chiropractic, and Will Ramos Photography. You must be present to win so plan on sticking around!
- EX2 Merchandise Sale: Bring some cash and pick up your Cranky Monkey hat or jersey, EX2 hat, EX2 car seat cover, or vintage t-shirt at the race. Hats are $20, Jerseys are $75, car seat covers are $25, and vintage t-shirts are $5 each or three for $10.
- Trail Maintenance / Pay Dirt Points: Help us keep the trails in great shape and earn 5 series points (pay dirt points) for helping at the final trail maintenance day this Saturday, August 9th. Work begins at 9:30am and will last until around 12:30pm. Meet in the upper parking lot of Fountainhead. Thank you.
