Rocky Gap Off-Road Triathlon
Escape the summer city heat and head for the mountains! Join us at Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, MD for the 22nd annual Rocky Gap Off-Road Triathlon, Duathlon, Aqua Bike, and Relay (formerly XTERRA EX2). For 2026, we’ve re-imagined our summer classic and created new bike and run courses and added a sprint race and aquabike. While the sprint course could be done on a gravel bike, we recommend mountain bikes for the full triathlon and duathlon.

FULL Course Descriptions
FULL Swim Course
The full triathlon starts with a .75 mile swim in beautiful Lake Habeeb. The swim is two laps with a 50 meter beach run between the laps. After exiting the water for the second time, racers run up to the transition area that is 100 meters from the water and transition to bike.
FULL Bike Course
The full bike course is a one-lap course measuring 10.5 miles and has a mix of natural surface trails and a little pavement. The total elevation change on the bike course is about 900 feet. The bike course incorporates the newly build trails on Bear Ridge and the technically challenging Rocky Trail, and beautiful water views along the Lakeside Loop Trail, and a little pavement. There are two on-course aid stations. We strongly recommend carrying a water bottle or other way to carry fluids. At the end of the bike, racers enter the TA and transition to run.
FULL Run Course
The full run course is a single loop that measures 5.8 miles with a total elevation gain of about 600 feet. The run course has about 1 mile of pavement and the rest is amazing singletrack and doubletrack and includes sections of the Lakeside Loop Trail, Settler’s Trail, Rocky Trail, Evitt’s Gorge Trail, Canyon Overloop Trail, and the newly built Bear Ridge Trails. There are four on-course aid stations on this leg. It’s epic.
FULL Duathlon Run #1
The full duathlon substitutes the swim with a 2.2 mile run with an elevation gain of about 100 feet. The terrain is a mix of trails and pavement. There is one on-course aid station on this leg.
SPRINT Course Descriptions
SPRINT Swim Course
The sprint triathlon starts with a .35 mile swim in beautiful Lake Habeeb. The swim is one lap in the water. After exiting the water, racers run up to the transition area that is 100 meters from the water and transition to bike.
SPRINT Bike Course
The sprint bike course is a one-lap course measuring about 5.1 miles and has a mix of natural surface trails and some pavement inside the park. The total elevation change on the bike course is about 320 feet. The bike course incorporates the beautiful water views along the Lakeside Loop Trail and a little pavement. There is one on-course aid station. We strongly recommend carrying a water bottle or other way to carry fluids. At the end of the bike, racers enter the TA and transition to run.
SPRINT Run Course
The sprint run course is a 2.2 mile run with an elevation gain of about 100 feet. The terrain is a mix of trail and pavement. There is one on-course aid station on this leg.
Team Relay Option (FULL courses only)
Each full duathlon and triathlon relay team may be comprised of two or three racers. Each athlete on relay teams must complete at least one segment of the race, either the swim or run (duathlon leg #1), 10.5 mile bike, or the 5.8 mile run. Racers will ‘tag’ each other at the bike rack where their bike is placed. For two person teams, one racer will have to complete two FULL segments and the other racer will only complete one segment.
