Fountainhead Course Description

This year’s race is planned to be a hybrid event…meaning we will have both an in-person event and a virtual event. The in-person race is scheduled for Saturday May 22, 2021 and Sunday May 23, 2021, and the virtual race occurs any time between May 16, 2021 and May 24, 2021.  The in-person race is capped at 225 people each day.

The Fountainhead Half Marathon and 10K courses are absolutely tough and they are absolutely beautiful. Fountainhead Regional Park, in Fairfax County, VA, is only 30 minutes outside of Washington D.C. and has an extremely remote feel for being so close to a major metropolitan area.  The half marathon(ish) course includes a 6-mile long stretch of the Bull-Run Occoquan Trail (BROT) from Fountainhead to Bull Run Marina as well as three seldom used side trails along the BROT.  The 10K(ish) course uses a shorter section of the BROT and one of the side trails…yes…it’s the one with the really epic climb!

Race Date: Saturday May 22nd and Sunday May 23rd + Virtual
Course Length:
13.5 miles (HM) and 6.5 miles (10K)

Virtual race can be run anytime between May 16th to May 24, 2021.  The actual course will stay marked on Monday May 24th.

Summary of COVID Precautions

The safety and health of all racers and volunteers are of upmost importance.  While all risk cannot be eliminated, the in-person race will have the following mitigations in place.  A summary of our precautions are below.

  • Event will comply with all local, state, and federal restrictions including participation limits.
  • Check-in and start times will be staggered from about 7:00am until 9:00am each day.  We may need to shift and adjust check-in times based on the number of people that sign up for each race.
  • Check-in groups and times will be assigned by pace.
  • Groups of 25 or less people will start every 5 minutes. Smaller groups will start if there is not a queue.
  • Check-in is touchless and event will be chip timed.
  • It is expected that each runner is ready to run when they check-in.  Please warm up and use the bathroom before you check-in. Portajohns will be available in the start queue while the runner is getting ready to start. We do not want people checking in and going back to your car.
  • Race giveaways (T-shirt) and post-race food and water are grab and go only and pre-packaged. We will have breakfast burritos, but the selection of food will be smaller than normal.
  • Parking, check-in, start, and finish areas of the event will have ample room for social distancing.
  • Signage will be used to remind people to wear their face coverings and stay socially distanced at all times.
  • Face coverings are required at all times when in check-in, starting, and finish areas.
  • Runners must carry a face covering during event (when running) and use when passing if ample distance is not available on the trail. If a racer doesn’t have a face covering, then one will be provided to them during check-in.
  • Awards ceremony may be virtual.
  • Spectators are discouraged.
  • Ample restrooms (portajohns and park bathrooms) are available to minimize queues. All restrooms will be sanitized once every 2 hours by EX2 staff.
  • Hand sanitizer stations available at check-in, start, and finish.
  • All racers will be required to self-validate that they do not have COVID symptoms or have been exposed to anyone suspected to have COVID for the 14 days leading up to event.
