Fountainhead Course Description
This year’s race will offer both in-person and virtual options. Fountainhead Regional Park is situated along the banks of the Occoquan Reservoir in Western Fairfax County. This awesome race course is beautiful and consists of hiking trails and a few old dirt roads. We’ve been racing at Fountainhead for almost 15 years now…and it continues to be a racer favorite. Fountainhead is one of our toughest (meaning awesome) courses with no shortage of rocks and roots. There are many steep climbs and descents, but none are long. The only pavement on the course is the first half mile up the park road.

Summary of COVID Precautions
The safety and health of all racers and volunteers are of upmost importance. While all risk cannot be eliminated, the in-person race will have the following mitigations in place. A summary of our precautions are below, and you can read our full COVID plan here.
- Event will comply with all local, state, and federal restrictions including participation limits.
- Check-in and start times will be staggered from roughly 7:15am until 9:15am. 5 mile runners will check-in first and then 10-milers.
- Check-in groups and times will be assigned by pace.
- Groups of 20ish people will start every 5 minutes. Smaller groups will start if there is not a queue.
- Check-in is touchless and event will be chip timed.
- It is expected that each runner is ready to run when they check-in. Please warm up and use the bathroom before you check-in. Portajohns will be available in the start queue while the runner is getting ready to start. We do not want people checking in and going back to your car.
- Race giveaways (T-shirt) and post-race food and water are grab and go only and pre-packaged. We will have breakfast burritos, but the selection of food will be smaller than normal.
- Parking, check-in, start, and finish areas of the event will have ample room for social distancing.
- Signage will be used to remind people to wear their face coverings and stay socially distanced at all times.
- Face coverings are required at all times when in check-in, starting, and finish areas.
- Runners must carry a face covering during event (when running) and use when passing if ample distance is not available on the trail. If a racer doesn’t have a face covering, then one will be provided to them during check-in.
- Aid stations are staffed for safety and with bottled water only. Athletes are requested to carry their own hydration.
- Awards ceremony will be virtual.
- Runners are not allowed to stay after the race except to cool down.
- Spectators are not allowed.
- Ample restrooms (portajohns and park bathrooms) are available to minimize queues. All restrooms will be sanitized once every 2 hours by EX2 staff.
- Hand sanitizer stations available at check-in, start, and finish.
- All racers will be required to self-validate that they do not have COVID symptoms or have been exposed to anyone suspected to have COVID for the 14 days leading up to event.
