Backyard Burn @ Laurel Hill

March 28, 2021 + Virtual

Laurel Hill Course Description

This year’s race will offer both in-person and virtual options. Located just south of the Capital Beltway in Lorton, this beautiful race course includes a mixture of forested and open meadow singletrack meandering through 1600 acres of the former prison grounds. The race starts and ends under the old guard towers at the Workhouse Arts Center, which is the site of the former Lorton Reformatory.  The course is one of our least technical and most of it is on singletrack that is a mix of dirt and crushed stone.  The only short pavement sections are at the beginning and end of the race.  There are no extended climbs, but lots of short ups and downs.

Summary of COVID Precautions

The safety and health of all racers and volunteers are of upmost importance.  While all risk cannot be eliminated, the in-person race will have the following mitigations in place.  A summary of our precautions are below.  Read our full COVID operations plan here.

  • Event will comply with all local, state, and federal restrictions including participation limits.
  • Check-in and start times will be staggered from roughly 7:15am until 10am. 5 mile runners will check-in first and then 10-milers.  We may need to shift and adjust check-in times based on the number of people that sign up for each race.
  • Check-in groups and times will be assigned by pace.
  • Groups of 25 or less people will start every 5 minutes. Smaller groups will start if there is not a queue.
  • Check-in is touchless and event will be chip timed.
  • It is expected that each runner is ready to run when they check-in.  Please warm up and use the bathroom before you check-in. Portajohns will be available in the start queue while the runner is getting ready to start. We do not want people checking in and going back to your car.
  • Race giveaways (T-shirt) and post-race food and water are grab and go only and pre-packaged. We will have breakfast burritos, but the selection of food will be smaller than normal.
  • Parking, check-in, start, and finish areas of the event will have ample room for social distancing.
  • Signage will be used to remind people to wear their face coverings and stay socially distanced at all times.
  • Face coverings are required at all times when in check-in, starting, and finish areas.
  • Runners must carry a face covering during event (when running) and use when passing if ample distance is not available on the trail. If a racer doesn’t have a face covering, then one will be provided to them during check-in.
  • Aid stations are staffed for safety only – no water will be provided with the exception of one water refill station at about the halfway point on the course. Athletes are required to carry their own hydration.
  • Awards ceremony will be virtual.
  • Runners are not allowed to stay after the race except to cool down.
  • Spectators are not allowed.
  • Ample restrooms (portajohns and park bathrooms) are available to minimize queues. All restrooms will be sanitized once every 2 hours by EX2 staff.
  • Hand sanitizer stations available at check-in, start, and finish.
  • All racers will be required to self-validate that they do not have COVID symptoms or have been exposed to anyone suspected to have COVID for the 14 days leading up to event.
